how to deal with image tag that could have different type images

For example, in a page, I will have a image tag like this

The file name is "star" which is fixed. But the extension I want it to be able to be "gif, jpeg, jpg, png or swf" as what ever i upload there. I will only put one image file with the name "star" there. Say it could be star.jpg, or star.gif or star.jpeg, or star.swf etc.

So how can I make the image shows, no matter what extension I use.

When you upload the image, you're able get the uploaded file extension easily, so, if you show it after uploading, it should be easy.

If you want to get it later, you may search for the contents of the folder, and get the extension of the file called star.

.swf files aren't embeded using the img tag.
