Problems: String within string within string?

Hello, I'm new here 😃 This is a great site!

I've been trying to get this to work for a while, but no luck. I was wondering if someone could help me... I have a text like the following:

[ quote = blah blah blah] quoted text [ / quote ] some more text....

What I need to do is cut out all (as may be more than one) [ quote = blah blah ]s from the string, so that i can work on them, preferably putting them into a variable. I've been looking through the PHP manual for a week, but haven't found anything, and quite frankly, I'm stumped! :mad:

Any help would be appreciated!

Firstly welcome to the board secondly amazingly this topic has come up a fair bit.

One way that i use is regex actually im pretty sure its the only SANE way to do it.


$string = " [ quote=blah blah blah]quoted text[/quote ]";
//of course this would work just take the space out of the quote stops vB from stuffing around. This regex isnt tested but its similar to what i use.

if (preg_match_all("/\\[quote=(.+?)\\](.+?)\\[\/quote\\]/is",$string,$out)) {
    print_r($out); 
/*$out is the variable which will be an Array holding all the values, you may need to fix the regex up as i dont think its 100% correct.*/

//from here its basically do what you like to it, if you wanted to just replace the quotes with HTML similar to BBcode, you preg_replace look at that in the PHP Manual also.

Thank you for your reply, I had a slight problem with the regex, but got past that. This is the code I have:

	 	$occurances = substr_count($quote_text,'[quote');
	    //loop through the post until there are no more quotes...

My problem is that instead of outputting the text from [ quote = blah blah ] it just says Array();... I can't figure out why :S
