Which DataBase Should I Pick??

I'm going to programm a project that will have probably around 100.000 entries on the database, and my hosting gave me free pass to any database I want to use....So I came to you, geeks, to ask what would be the greater database for this range of use concerning stability and performance?

I would like to hear some thoughts on this...

i think ms-sql server is good, but then again i heard the new mysql coming out will perform more advanced features like sql server.

we need to know more about the application itself...

what are you planning to do?
how many records (per week/ per month etc)
how much data are you planning on storing? are you planning on using blobs?

100K rows in a properly designed and indexed db is nothing...we have mysql db currently that are approaching 500M in size (including storage of binarys in the db (not my preference, but sometimes you don't have a choide)

Mysql is good, postgresql is even better (personally i have no love for ms products mainly due to cost)

Well...It will be a site that sells products....The products are managed by the public, public will be able to add, edit and remove them. It has to have a user system, but I guess it wont be many users, since there will be only whole sellers. It has to have a very powerful search system, so ppl can find the product they are looking for easely.

So the trafic of products in database will be around 100.000 at max, I dun beleive that in the same time more then 100.000 products will be available in Database....So what I have in mind is a database that can handle relatively low amount of data, fastly and securitly....

Thinking myself now.....SQLite seems the BD of choice, but I am a bit unsure about its security....

Any thoughts?

securirty in most dbs is made of two factors...how the db is installed (which likely you won't have control over) and how you build the secuirty for the user accounts and aplication.

The user account for the (to be truely safe ) should only have select, insert and update privileges. (use a record flag to indicate product deleted, added with an update) and don't show those records with that flag...

whether its mysql or sqlite, its all the same...mysql is free and commonly available...

Interesting your idea of flags so users cant indeed delete entries...Will use that ;-)

My concern about security is with the database files of sqlite....I imagine that if I place them outside site´s tree I can make it a bit safer.

Any idea on how ppl is dealing w/ it?

they must be outside the tree, on a seperate machine preferrably...your host can tell you about the network setup.
