<b>, <u>, <i> Buttons?

I have a text area

<TEXTAREA class = "textbox" name = "contactUpdate" rows="23" cols="85"></TEXTAREA>

And I want to make 3 buttons on top of it.
One for BOLD one for ITALICS and one for UNDERLINE

Basically what I want is for the BOLD button to put
<b></b> into the text area and then place the cursor inbetween <b> and </b>

Same thing for the other buttons with <u></u> and <i></i>
