can php do this?!!

Hello there, please excuse my ignorance, im a total newbie, wondered if php could help me tackle a task.

I want to run a database from a netwok drive and user access via a php based site?

I have been reading a php for dummies book but this is very web orientated and slightly cofusing

My main question is, what are the barebones i need to do this?

My book talks about installing a web server, and i have tried to install apache but straight away it asks for domain info etc!!

You don't us enough to go on. If your intention is to use the browser as your user interface then you would be well dvised to install apache (if this will only be used on your locak network the diomain can be anything i.e. mycompnay.local).

PHP is the scripting language you would use to access the data and display it. You will also need a database such ans MySQL.

So, to answer you - yes it can be done and you need apache, php and MySQL.

This will be a great leaning project and will take some effort.

the project in mind is for a friends company, they run windows 2003 server so i would use Windows SQL, i figure i would install apache on the network drive.

where do i install php?? on the same drive as apache or the sytsem drive with the database?

i was hoping to write and test this system on my laptop, without having to disturb the company, how do i go about this, are there any install guides for php, apache and my sql?

PHP will need to be installed where the web server is, as it will be an extention of that server.

Yes, you can install PHP, Apache and a database server on a laptop. As for install guides...I'd go to the different web sites for those...

If it is windows2003 server then they almost certainly have a web server installed, IIS, so you won't need apache - although you may prefer it to IIS.

Read the manual for installation and config of php on windows.

You can use almost any database engine with php, whatever they already use. You can also install MySQL on windows so the choice is yours.

Apache to H:\apache
Php to H:\php

have edited apache\conf\httpd.conf, as described here

When i try and start apache i recieve the following error

Syntax error on line 241 of h:/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot add module via name 'mod_php5.c': not in list of loaded modules

any ideas?

did you install php5 or php4?

btw- you may find something like this easier. you litterally double click the .exe and your DONE
