Easiest way to get position

i have table wich have information about scores (mysql)

|id|member|score|game_id|time

when i insert score what would be easiest way to get position wich (s)he got?

is there someway to do this with query?
or must i loop thought all? or should i make new field position and update it after every submit?

I'd try something like this:

select count(score) 
from scores
where score < $newscore

  while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result) {
extract($row);

/*this will return the scoce that is greater than the newscore, if the new score is greater than any other score then the file will return the die.*/

This should work or atleast give you an idea
