group consecutive numbers from an array

I've been rying to figure this out for a while but can't get my head around it.

I'm trying to group consecutive numbers from an array...

Array
(
    [0] => 1
    [1] => 2
    [2] => 3
    [3] => 4
    [4] => 14
    [5] => 21
    [6] => 23
    [7] => 28
    [8] => 29
)

The function I want should return an array like this...

Array
(
    [0] => 1:4
    [1] => 14
    [2] => 21
    [3] => 23
    [4] => 28:29
)

Any help would be extremely appreciated!

Interesting....
I gave it a shot. No checking in the function, and no guarantees it'll work, but this seemed to produce the desired results....

function group_nums($array) {
   $ret  = array();
   $temp = array();
   foreach($array as $val) {
      if(next($array) == ($val + 1))
         $temp[] = $val;
      else
         if(count($temp) > 0) {
            $temp[] = $val;
            $ret[]  = $temp[0].':'.end($temp);
            $temp   = array();
         }
         else
            $ret[] = $val;
   }
   return $ret;
}

$nums = array(1, 2, 3, 4, 14, 21, 23, 28, 29);
print_r(group_nums($nums));

Thanks for that it works perfectly!

I'll spend a little time on it and post it back here when I'm done with some error checking, etc. I just needed to get over that hill.

The application this is going in is an events calendar where the dates entered will display neatly. I'm also making it do other tricky stuff like...

'Every Sunday' or 'Every 1st Monday of the Month', etc depending on the dates selected and the patterns they have.

I like a challenge. Took me a few minutes to wrap my head around it too. Love to see what ya do with it. Should probably put some is_numeric checks on the values, and is_array check on the array and a sort, I'd think. I already see some things I coulda done better. That's the worst thing about "off the top of the head" code.

# Like these two lines
            $temp[] = $val;
            $ret[]  = $temp[0].':'.end($temp);
# should just be reduced to one
$ret[] = $temp[0].':'.$val;
