Hmm. Not sure if that is what its called but, ive been looking lately to stop using paper based database designs showing relationships and field types which is getting out of hand especially with big databases, that and I tend to make it very messy and unreadable. Ive searched google maybe im searching the wrong terms or something because nothing has come up that is even remotely close. If I cant find one I might try and create one.
Database Schematic Program
Microsoft Visio is about the best for this sort of thing. Theres also Rational Rose, but I've not used it.
Data Modelling is the dicipline, this includes object modeling so you'll find a lot of UML tools (like ArgoUML) but there's also a few ERD ones, which is what you'll be wanting for a relational database.
Here's a list of data modelling tools. Some of the links are broken so you'll have to google for them.
Ones to look out for (apparently, I've not tried any): Dia (GNU Visio clone for both X11 & Win32), DB Designer 4 (Win only )
Thanks for the link will check them out. Ive actually got DIA, but didnt think of it as what I wanted did a run of it and dont like it too much. Most are unfotunately Windows based too so thats a pitty. Ill look at a few more however if worse comes to worse ill create a small scale version of what I require using PHP.
Hmm yea, I just took a look at dia and it does seem very UML oriented. Just installed DB Designer 4 and it's really nice, a little bit fussy with mouse clicks but still very good. Also, it's aparently designed specifically with MySQL in mind, which is what the sites here at work use, so that's pretty cool.
They seem to have taken down the Linux version for it, that or its pointing to the wrong file, its a pitty that I do most of my Development work in Linux.
I usually spend my days pissing and moaning that I'm stuck on a Windows box from 9-5.30 Monday-Friday but today I'm almost glad ... I did say almost :p
Right now i just use access for my data and function dictionary. and for diagrams I use Visio. The nice thing about visio is you can cut and paste them in word so anyone can view your diagram (even if they do no have visio).
Erwin, if you have big bucks.
Na havent got big bucks to spend not at the moment anyway, the one I viewed that DB designer 4 looked almost exactly what I wanted but seems to be Win Only.

Please tell me you were either extremely sick, or drunk after drinking heavily.
Dammit, I've been looking for the download for db designer all day. It's even installed on a lot of the PCs at Uni. Unfortunately they call it DB Developer, which really annoyed me, cos I couldn't find it.
I've got it now, so I can continue my work now
Just quickly, has anyone got DB designer 4 to work with MySQL 4.1? I'm having issues with it
