getting home path

i asked this question on the php list and was no one knew how and some gave me answers that didn't work.. so maybe someon here will have an idea.

i need to get the root path to my home directory..

eg,

/usr/home/user

DOCUMENT_ROOT returns /usr/home/user/public_html

but i just want the path to the root directory, isn't there a variable i can use? someone on the list told me $_SERVER['home'] but that doesn't even seem to be a valid predefined variable...

$docroot = str_replace("/public_html","",$_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"]);
echo $docroot;

so that is the only solution? its kind of stupid of php not to have some predefined variable for getting root path..
