how to get monthname in php

I used explode function to get year, month, day. How to get monthname in php.
Example 27 December, 2004

$month_name = date('F', strtotime($year . '-' . $month . '-' . $day));

I used substr instead explode. Thanks now it is working. thank you for ur help.
