because it contains at least one of the characters you define. if you want to consist the investigated string only of those, use assertion for beginning and end.

pattern:

^[a-z0-9]+$

(removed uppercase letters - you match case-insensitive anyway)

mmm, don't the ereg functions even support assertion 🙁? I thought they would.

anyway, I'm pretty sure that

preg_match( "/^[a-zA-Z0-9]+$/", $variable)

should work (I would have recommended the preg functions anyway, much more powerful once you get on with regular expressions).
