I have reviewed a whole bunch of areas about javascript and am trying to find examples and tutorials about how to insert into textarea values from a button. Such as the reply and post areas of this forum. I have experimented and keep failing.

Very right, this post maybe better situated in the Echo Lounge. However i simple search of this forum may give you a result since there have been similar posts.
Try the W3C school . Full definition of all html elements and plenty of examples of how to maniuplate them with javascript.
