O/R mapping

Hi guys,

I have been PHPing for around 5 years and using MySQL as my database. Everything just works great. Recently I am interested in O/R mapping because I find sometimes the result set returned from mysql_query() doesn't 100% fit my need, instead an object in these cases would be much better.

Actually this happens not only in PHP but all OO programming languages - the gap between OO and RDBMS. Therefore it is why O/R mapping comes into play. I raised this topic in several forums but I got almost no reply.

Is O/R mapping really such a uncommon tool? :queasy: And any body here use O/R mapping in his/her projects?

That's a new term on me. Have you looked at PostgreSQL's support for object field types?

I'm using the PEAR DB_DataObject O/R mapping tool (class auto-generator and query builder) on several projects.

I have one which has been running for a couple of years now and three more in development.

I've come to the conclusion that it's the only way to work - it saves a great deal of work and fixes certain problems before they occur.

Good to know someone in this forum is using O/R mapping tool. I think it is a great tool that worths more attention. It is a not a language-specific tool (although it seems it is Java-only) and therefore should catch more attention than it has now.

The Java guys at my company use OJB for this. I'd be interested to hear of a PHP version that works in the same way. I'll take a further look at the PEAR class when I get a chance.
