One of my tables uses a date created timestamp and a lastmodified timestamp and I would like a modification from today to show up before a new item from yesterday but a new item from yesterday to show up before a modification from two days ago. I figured there would be an sql function for this.

You can write the order by yourself:

ORDER BY
(IF datemodified>datecreated, datemodified, datecreated)

That does seem to be what I was looking for but it isn't working.

Here's my full query:
SELECT s.shrineusercommentid, s.shrineid, s.parentid, s.authorid, s.content, s.posted, s.lastmodified, u.username
FROM shrineusercomments s LEFT JOIN users u ON u.userid=s.authorid
WHERE s.shrineid=1 ORDER BY (IF s.lastmodified>s.posted, s.lastmodified, s.posted) DESC LIMIT 0,20

MySQL error message: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 's.lastmodified>s.posted, s.lastmodified, s.posted) DESC LIMIT 0,20' at line 3

it is just the parenthesis that is slighty off, should have been probably easy enough to look it up in the manual:
