[Resolved] removing part of the name from the table

Hi,
how can I set up a query to update a table such that all records with names that are like "The XXXX" chage to "XXXX"?

UPDATE table SET fieldname = 'XXXX' WHERE fieldname LIKE 'The XXXX'

I believe you can use LIKE in UPDATE queries.

Or you can always use a substr directly in the query to just remove "The " from the beginning of the specified field.

The MySQL manual has plenty of info on that...

I have a bunch of records that start with "The".
I want to change records like "The Apple:, "The Orange", .... to "Apple", "Orange", ...
Using SUBSTRING would return the location of "The" in the string i.e. 1.

I was wondering if there is a way to do a mass update and change evrything that starts with "The" to the same thing without the "The".

UPDATE table SET filedname=substring(filedname,4) WHERE filedname LIKE 'The %'
