Setting PHP_AUTH_USER From A Form

Is there any way to set the $PHP_AUTH_USER and $PHP_AUTH_PW values from a form rather than displaying the ugly basic-http-authentication-window? I already tried locationing them over to user:pass@domain but IE apparently no longer likes that trick.
