PHP payments

Hi Guys,
I am trying to make some adjustments to this site for my client. At the moment people go onto the site and hit a button to sign up for membership. The button takes them to a third party where they can pay securely but its an ugly process. I am in the process of making php pages so when people sign up all the data is moved to a mysql database. What I want to do is set it up so the signup and the payment is all seemless. Its all done on the site through our server.

We currently have a merchant ID but our server needs an ssl certificate of some kind and I need some advice on passing the purchases to a payment gateway.

Can anybody give me some solid advice on these topics.

most payment gateways have apis avaialble for this. so the process will totally depend on the api.

and dont even think of storing credit card #'s in your database. if you must do it, a dedicated server is a must, and they must be stored encrypted. i wouldnt even try unless your extremely confident in your abilities(and that confidence is warranted). otherwise the risk to the customers is simply too high.

Definately not thinking of storing vital information like credit cards. Just want to process the payments seemlesly through php to a payment gateway.

Application Programming Interface. The precise specification of how you communicate with the payment gateway.

If your payment processor is any good they will have all the instructions you need. If they don't then they are not worth doing businees with. I've set up several payment systems over the years and the good one allow you to upload your own payment page onto their server so that you can maintain your site style etc. However, I generally just use their standard payment page. It actually reasures the user to know that they are dealing direct with the 'bank' and their card details are not being processed on your website.

We are with securepay and I am not sure if they have good instructions on connecting to their gateway. In the process of contacting them now.

Well, I can personally recommend secpay.com - been using them for 4 years. Excellent service, first class support and full technical specs for integrating into your website. I also find them to be one of the most competitively priced. Since we process a high value transactions we use the flat fee traiff, not the percentage of value. And since we process a high volume every month we got it down to 20p per transaction. I don't know anywhere else that is that cheap, but I do know plenty that are not half as good and several times the price.

Thanks Roger Ramjet, I have managed to download a tech document from secure pay (directone) on connecting to the gateway. Will see how I go with that.
