When filename excists adding a random number

I got a little problem i'm ussing the
$bestandsnaam = $_FILES['bestand']['name'];

and when the folder where i'm uploading to already contains a file called like that i would like to ad a random number to that bestandsnaam but offcourse the .jpg or .jpeg or .bmp whatever is bothering me.
Like bellow it will turn out .jpg3 instead of nameoffile3.jpg

$bestandsnaam = $bestandsnaam . rand(1, 9);

See my problem
Maybe i need to use a different $_files variable but i can't find a list of which variables are preset when you upload a file.

Hope somebody can help me with this.

if (isset($pathinfo['extension'])) {$ext = $pathinfo['extension'];}
else {$ext = '';}
$random_filename = basename($_FILES['bestand']['name'], '.' . $ext) . rand(1, 9) . $ext;

echo $random_filename;

BTW: i highly recommend using timestamps instead of random numbers for this sort of thing

I'm gonna use it in a while function so it will work just aswell as the time function.

for future reference there needs to be a point between the name and the extencion like this:
$bestandsnaam = basename($_FILES['bestand']['name'], '.' . $ext) . rand(1, 9) . "." . $ext;
