how do i get/change the username and password in mysql

for example im doing this in pgp

mysql_connect("localhost","root","password");

Now i have no idea what my username and password is. i forgot. How would i go about recovering or making a new password and username so that i can start learning databases. please help i have been trying to solve this problem for 3 days now and i am desperate..

Welcome to the forum, i'm new here too - so don't expect any fab answers from me.

You'll have to contact your admin for database names, passwords etc, depends what type of hosting you have. But without knowing where your database is or the password you're not going to be learning a great deal (other than the importance of keeping important information in a safe an secure location).

You will have to reinstall it. No problem if it's your own machine and holds no production data. MySQL encrypts the user passwords before it stores them, and it is one-way encrytion so you'll never recover it.

Because, according to your post, you cannot authenticate with the correct username and password. Look you've wasted 3 days on this, should have been 3 hours while you removed and reinstalled mysql. Good installation practice. No way you can recover the password, and without it you cannot create a new user, so stop wasting your time and emotional energy and just do what works.

i did uninstall and reinstall the service. but i never again got the option to make a username and password. it just installed asked to create a "root" password but no username.

Format hard drive, reinstall Linux etc. Good practice. Or use the b/up one never takes after a clean build and install and always ends up wishing one had.

im using windows. what does it mean when you get error 1046: no database selected

Well, it means that you have no database selected!

Apparently, you succeeded in connecting to your server; but as you did not yet create a database of your own, you are simply logged in to your dbms.

Once you have created a database, you have to select it using "connect your_database_name"
