Please Help - How to send variables without user intervention?

Hello everyone!
I have searched on the forums for a bit on how to solve this problem but I just can't figure it out.

I have a file called page.php which has a variable called pageID passed to it. page.php then retrieves the correct page from the database corresponding to the pageID.

This is all well and good, except for one thing. I would like to make it so that a user can't just type in the URL to get to whatever pageID they want. (This is an online browser-based game).

Is there any way besides checking to make sure the page has a correct referrer to do this?

If thats the case your not going to be able to stop the users. You should probably put a few counter measures in.

You said this was a game. What part of the game is this?

I am not quite sure what you mean by what part of the game this is, but I will try my best to answer.

This basically links everything together to form a game page. It calls the right PHP file with the right variables, retrieves the output from the PHP file, and sets the output to a variable. It then creates an instance of template.php which the variables of $title and $body, which template.php then puts in the appropriate places.

I pretty much have the basics all planned but this issue was really bugging me. I suppose just putting a couple of simple countermeasures like you suggested should be enough to keep the average casual hacker away.
