Sessions...

ok i was using sessions but for some reason its doing strange things...

ive got a main.php page which sets a session variable (ID), then all the other pages that can be loaded off main make use of the session var (ID) to access data connected to that ID..

anyway ive tried unsetting the session var and tried to set it to a different var.. but still it wont change... any reason why?

ive even tried logging out of my comp and logging back in and it still wont unset it... its like its burned into the comp..lol

do you just need to use:

session_start();

$_SESSION["blurb"] = "woooo";

unset($_SESSION["blurb"]);

or is there more to it? lol

erm its too many files and a bit complex.. heres a simple example...

// Main.php
session_start();
if(isset($_SESSION["ID"]))
 unset($_SESSION["ID"]);

$_SESSION["ID"] = 1;

// GetData.php
session_start();
echo $_SESSION["ID"];

i use a session from someone logging into the main page to get their ID/Name as a session var, then i use this session on multiple other pages to get info about the data relating to this ID/Name. Unfortunatly for some reason if you imagine i set the session to = 100, it now wont unset... and i dont know why..lol

it just seemed a easier and more secure way of keeping a user logged in while viewing tons of different sections of the website, as no one can really tamper with sessions externally, so it thought it would be better this way than $_GET["ID"] for every page as then anyone could change the ID in the address and cheat their way in as someone else...

so it wont log out the person logged in.. i hope that helps..

well, your defining the variable again right after you unset it, so your recreating it

session_start();
if(isset($_SESSION["ID"]))
 unset($_SESSION["ID"]); // its dead as of this line

$_SESSION["ID"] = 1;// its alive again

unless, you saying if you set the variable to 123 on some page, and then goto main.php and it wont change to the value of 1?

if you want to destroy thier whole session, look at session_destroy()

ive even tried destroying whole session, as i said i also tried logging off my comp and logging back in... while i was testing scripts all pages had a manual setting for the ID at the top, but now testing phase is over i deleted them all and only have 1 setting/1 unsetting of the session var.. but its still using the old values and not the new ones 🙁

after messing around now that im awake i realised why its doing this... its seeing the session var as 0 or not set even tho it should be set to "31" in my current testing.. is there some reason why a session var would not get sent from page to page?

i mean it is ok on one page to do

$_SESSION["var"] = 1;

and then each page that calls session_start() can utilize that variable correct?

(evey page has session_start() in btw)

i am not sure why it is happening but you can use....

print_r ($_SESSION);

to view the contents of the session to see if anythig at all is being passed accross your pages.
give some examples of what it is doing and what is happening and i will try to help.

ok.. done that...

Main.php output is: Array ( [ID] => 10 ) // correct
IDStatus.php output is: Array ( ) // incorrect

both pages are within the same folder, both pages have session_start() at the top, both pages use session variables...

i dont know why it isnt seeing it..

you are putting

session_start();

at the top of each page???

apart from that i can only suggest using

php_info();

to see if your session settings are set up right.

try loading main.php and setting the session id to 10 then print_r the session then delete the setting bit to see if can be seen again. e.g......
first time in Main.php

<?
session_start();
$_SESSION["ID"] = 10;

print_r ($_SESSION);
?>

then run that then change Main.php to ......

<?
session_start();

print_r ($_SESSION);
?>

to see if it has been carried accross the same page.

thats the current state of the PHP info.. if that means anything to you...lol

and the data showsup fine on main.php its just when it goes to the other page it messes up.. BUT the strange thing is..

page 1 -> page 2 // session 1 vars dont reach page 2
page 2 -> page 1 // session vars from page 2 reach page 1...

its just the session vars on the main page that dont get passed... and yes all pages that use session vars have session_start() at the top...

ok erm... ive screwed around and now it works... GOD KNOWS how or why.. but if im on any page that uses the session vars.. if i press refresh it still shows in the print_r($_SESSION) that the vars are there.. but the page wont use them.. until they refresh again or move to another page... any reason why you need to refresh twice?

ok this is just crazy... it fixed... for some unknown reason... then started going crazy again....

each time i refresh the 2nd page it states the correct ID at the top... but ever other refresh even tho the ID is right the data it retrieves is all null.... ???? this is mad..lol

most likely this behavior is not php's fault, its prob just the way your coding things.

its hard to help without seeing more code, and i realize its prob far too much code to post, but if you can simplify it to something smaller that is able to still recreate the behavior your experiencing, it would be much easier to help you.

as far as the session persisiting even after rebooting, to me that sounds like the session cookies have an expire value on them. default for session is an expires of 0, which the browser interprets as meaning hold onto the cookie until the browser is closed. but if you set an expires of say 10000, then the browser will hold onto that cookie for no less than 10000 seconds, reboot or not. if thats not the case, then it is likely a problem with your code.

i doubt it is PHPs fault...

but i dont know where the problem lies... it goes nuts and this refreshing problem kicks in.. then 5 mins later its fixed itself.. then it starts working again... then it breaks again...lol

if i knew what part of the code is causing this i would post it... but EVERY page has this refresh problem when it kicks in..lol

it started off not sending session vars... now that it does this refresh thing is making everything go haywire...lol

edit:

i dont know why... but for some reason when the system goes haywire its the DB interactions that wont work... anyway when it does go haywire i tried manually interacting with the DB thru phpmyadmin thingy....

anyway i got this error when trying to change table data:

Error on rename of '.\Game\characters.MYI' to '.\Game#sql2-ad8-194.MYI'

this give any tips on whats going on...as im now leaning to think its not the sessions causing problems its the DB in some way...

is there anything wrong with doing this query?

$ID = 10;

for some reason it works and then stops working, while ive been playing, the refresh amounts have gone up and down.. i mean one time the DB queries would work every other refresh or every other page... then it went to every other 3, then went to working 3 in a row, then 5.. then back to 2.. lol

i cant see any logical reason why queries would work sometimes and not others... ????

has ANYONE heard of these problems before?

most of the functionality for the system i developed is held within 2 files, 1 being a basic DBUtil and the other being derived from that which has tons of functions in...

nope i havernt heard anything like that before, i dont think you can rename sql tables to things with characters in e.g. "-" it doesnt like that on mine.
only thing i can suggest is reinstalling php apache (whatever your using) and you browser (firefox hopefully has good tools for developers).

k will do.... but why would it start trying to rename SQLfiles when im appending data? and why would it want to rename it to something as whacky as that...lol
