I have a standup comic website. My visitors can view a comic's performance, then rate it. I am having people going in and voting multiple times for the same person..ie..probably THAT comic to boost his ratings. How would I capture IP address of the person rating this comic so they can't vote twice. I already have field in my database to store the IP address of the person giving the rating. I just need to figure out how to capture the IP address. Heck, I wouldn't mind if they voted once a week since the video performances change. Thanks

One point. Most people are getting an IP dynamically allocated from their ISP, or surfing through a proxy so IP is no guarantee of identity. Best bet would be a cookie, but then some people block cookies, but only the savvy.

your best bet would be to make the user log in to be able to vote. that way you can limit the votes per week by the login name.

But the 'friend' would just keep on registering under new names. Just set a cookie and if they won't accept one they can't vote.

you could also set the registration up by email.

or if you see that the guy keeps voting himself. just knock his votes back down to 0
