Remote Monitoring Software

Just curios what you guys are using (if anything).. I suddenly have found myself in the need for something to remotely monitor multiple servers (and full domains of servers). I have looked at

Big Sister
Nagios
Zabbix
OpenNMS

They all seem sort of "Heavy/Bloated". I would realy just like a backend which captures daily snapshots of really basic information (Services running/disk status/cpu load/network stats/open ports) from both Windows and Linux machines.

Any comments or suggestions?

Captures daily snapshots? Wouldn't some sort of software that alerts you to a problem be a better idea?

Have a look at Servers Alive - free for up to (I think) 20 entries

Really looking for something Open Source... And of course SMS/Paging/Alerting would have to be a component...

Has anyone ever played with PHP-CLI and the SNMP fxns? Of course that would mean installing PHP-CLI on each machine you would want to monitor....and settingup a Cron/Task Manager job to run regularly.

It just seems that learning to setup something like NAGIOS just to ensure that 1)MySQL server is running and 2)MySQL server has ample disk space and 3) Service on port XXX is running is a little rediculous no?

Why open source? If you're lookin for that cos it's free, then SA will do the job for you... it already has SMS/Paging built in
