Script doesn't see parameter

I have a script which takes one optional parameter. It works perfectly when working locally on my PC. However, when the script the script is uploaded to the site, it ignores the parameter completely, doesn't even see it. What could cause this? Is is something about the PHP configuration? If so how do I fix it?? Thank you.

My best guess is that you're talking about a script taking an argument via the querystring. In which case I'll assume that the problem is how you're accessing the variable, in that one machine may have register globals turned on while the other may have it off. In which case my advice is to access the variable by using $_GET['varname'] rather than $varname.

If your problem is something else you might consider posting sample code and input.

I dont think thats what he was talking about, sounds like his talking about functions and having functions with optional parameters.

function myfunc($req,$opt='')
{
    //statement
}

Now what PHP version do you have? What PHP version is online?

Also yes we do need to see some code.

My problem is (I think) much more elementary. I am simply calling a script with a parameter. Here is the relevant code:

echo ' year is ' . $year . '<br>' ;
?>

On one server where my own site is hosted, this works fine. If I type

www.xxxxx.com/broken.php?year=2004

in the address bar of the browser, it echos "year is 2004". But on the other hosting service, the same script echos "year is ".

I don't know much about PHP configuration yet. I assume this is some kind of configuration problem. What should I ask the hosting service to change? or, can I change it myself?

The problem is likely just that the hosting service has register globals disabled. No need to change any configuration, unless you want to disable it on your local machine as well. Its a good idea to not rely on register globals anyway.

Try this code instead:

<?php
echo ' year is ' . $_GET['year'] . '<br>' ;
?>

You didn't mention your version of php. $_GET is available in 4.1.0 and after. You can read about it here.
