Hello all! I am new here and have an general idea of where I want to take my website to, but I realize that php is probably the best way for it. I used to work as a newspaper webmaster and had three sites to maintain on a weekly basis. We used a program on a mac, FileMaker Pro and had custom scripting from corporate that would extract the data from the files in quark and turn them into a webpage using databases and tables.

We could have captions and headlines and styles and such. But how would I start to make something similar to that for a site that I can update daily with new stories and images?

That is my main problem is where to begin, I have the idea and some of the technical know how and learn fast, but where to start???LOL

It wont teach you everything but will give you a better idea on PHP in general and will teach you some basics.

Also what experience do you have so far in any language?

Your going to be more than likely using a database mainly so you may want to look for one most popular with PHP is MySQL however PostgreSQL is gaining some popularity.

I've been having pretty good luck with just taking it one step at a time. Figure out one thing that you will want your code to do and set out to learn it. Google search for php tutorials on what you are trying to accomplish. If you get stuck, search this board and if you can't find anything, just post a q for help.

Okay. I have some web experience and have a dbase setup and ready, my major problem, and my major goal is just to create a dbase with information in it and extract it to a web page to display it in a formal way.

I have had experience in different scripting languages, proprietory stuff from the newspaper sites out there, and want to emulate a few of those but with php.

Here is the plan- Create the dbase (done)
Create a set of templates (wip)
Create the table rows and primary keys (wip)
Create a page that will allow me to admin new content (wip)

What I need to know how to do is actually set the page up to call back the info for web visitors.
