accessing remote files via ssh

hi,

i'm trying to access and edit a file on a linux server (which actually is a game server, not web server) from a web site that is not being hosted on the same box. the linux game server that i'm trying to connect to has to be connected via ssh as ftp won't work. needless to say, it has a username and password to connect. i looked up php.net for the right functions, but i couldn't find any...any ideas as to how to deal with this? i program in php, but when it comes to files, i'm a newbie...any help wud b highly appreciated!

SSH isn't a transfer protocol, like FTP. If you are using ssh you are simply opening a terminal on your local machine for the server. You have complete command line access once you are connected, just like opening a command prompt on your local machine. If you are trying to edit a file you just ssh in and vi (or your favorite *nix text editor) the file. If you are trying to download the file then reupload it check into scp (secure copy which runs on top of the ssh protocol).

yea...i meant sftp/scp not ssh! sry my bad! but yeah, i'm trying to get that to work...download the file using scp onto a temp directory and edit it, and then upload it back to the server...

When I've done this before I set up ssh to allow the script to log in via public keys with no passphrase. Not a great idea overall security-wise, but still better then ftp. This page describes the process with cygwin. I did it linux to linux, but the process is basically the same.

After that I set up sudo to allow the web server user to use scp via the proper user's account. (Use a system type function, and so on.)
