I would like to make a script that will allows users to edit fields they choose. They would have several different rows of data to change and they can click an edit button to change a specific row.

IE:

Name:.......Phone#:........AltP#:

Jim...........555-1234.......555-1223...[Edit]
Pam..........555-4321.......555-4332...[Edit]

Where [edit] = a button. When the user clicks on edit they can change that row of data. The end product would allow sessions for people to only edit data they have permissions for. But for the time being I am taking this one step at a time.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to do this. I don't need anyone to create a script for me, instead just tell me where to look for it. I am still new to PHP and I have much to learn but I can't seem to find where to look for this. Any help would be wonderful.

Amongst the umpteen ways to do this are:

change the edit button to a link that passes the row id to edit script in the URL. Like phpmyqdmin.

make a form for each row that posts the row id to an edit script in a hidden field. My personal choice.

Both of these are simple and robust.

give each edit button a unique name that includes the row id and have the edit script extract it.

Unneccessarily complex and prone to errors.

On the subject of using a link instead of a button. I avoid GET as much as I can, I just think params in the URL look untidy.

I do have one page that lists records in a table. I make every entry in every cell into a link (without text decoration). The user can then click anywhere on any row and be taken to the relevent record. Works a treat.
