building app for multiple DB's

does anyone here build apps to work with different types of database? I want to do that, but the way db connections work it seems difficult. Or am I missing something?

Usually one uses one of the various db abstraction layers available.

i am working on a PHP server that I do not have control of and does not have PEAR or any other data abstraction layer that I know. i guess there is no easy way to do it from the installed PHP functions?

PEAR's db abstraction layer is written in PHP. Funnily enough, so are most of the others.

still bein relatively new to PHP I was not sure what PEAR was. My first quick read over made me think it was a dll extension you have to add to the server.

I went to PEAR again and read it more and it seems that I am wrong (it happens a lot). I am going to look much more into this.
