Regex Newbie

Hi Guys, I am kind of new at writing regex's, can someone help me debug my regex? Here is my preg_match:

preg_match_all("<a href=.?(/you/me/.{3}).?>.{1,25}</a>", $teststring, $out, PREG_PATTERN_ORDER);

The error I am getting on this line is:
Warning: Unknown modifier '.' in g:...\index.php on line 4

Where exactly am I misusing a period?

I am trying to accept strings such as:
<a href='/you/me/xxx'>[upto 25 chars here]</a>

Well, obvious issue is that you didn't delimit your search pattern. I would suggest first off putting something like "#" at the beginning and end of your pattern.
