mysql_real_escape_string requiring second parameter

How do I get mysql_real_escape_string to not require the second parameter? According to the manual, it's optional, but my script is telling me 'access denied' (and that I'm trying to access as root) when I try to use it. So maybe it is required?

mysql_real_escape_string requires that you have an active connection to the database open. If you don't give it the second parameter then it will automatically take the last opened connection to the database instead.

To escape strings for mysql without a database connection you should be able to use mysql_escape_string.

I see - because my query hasn't happened yet, the connection hasn't been opened.

i managed to get it working - I see I don't need to provide the connection for every instance, just the first. But probably better to do it for all, for consistency's sake.
