GD Problems!

This is really 2 problems 🙂

1) Is it possible in GD, to take an image (say gobo.png or something) and place it on a GD Canvas, then use other things like fonts and stuff on top of it. Using GD to use pictures to make another sort of thing, like a collage!

2) I want to write stuff on a canvas using GD, but i dont know how to specify fonts... well i know HOW, i just dont know where the fonts are on my server, or how to specify! are there any defaults ? what titles may verdana/ariel go under ?

1) Yes.
2) I don't know where they are either. I don't have your server. You should be able to upload font files of your own somewhere and use those. As for what other names fonts like Verdana and Arial go under, there aren't any: the names are registered trademarks of Microsoft and Monotype corporations respectively. However, other fonts might be around that look similar. For example, Arial exists because Microsoft couldn't get a license from Linotype to use Helvetica, so commissioned Monotype to design a "Helvetica lookalike". Personally, I think Helvetica looks better at larger sizes; Arial and Verdana were designed for lower resolution displays.

your so very useful! I did think i may need to specify "exactly" what i wanted, by saying "and could you tell me how?" - but i thought, "nah, there over 5, they will realise general knowledge of PHP wont be what im looking for! 🙂 so... "how" may it be done?

and onion - does that mean it cannot be done without installing anything new (assuming PHPhoto does have to be installed!

Nah, they're over 5, if they've been reading the manual well enought to know about the image functions then they must surely have come across imagecopy and seen what it's described as doing. Then they would have made a start on trying to do it themselves. If they got stuck then they'd have described what they were trying to do, shown how they were trying to do it, what it was doing that was wrong, and what they did to try and fix it.

so, after 6 posts we finally get to the answer of "imagecopy" . 🙂

Yeah, i do admit i overlooked that. I didnt read all the image functions (only the ones which i thought would be relevant such as "imagecreatefrom...."). But thanks! That looks like its exactly what i need! 🙂

PHPhoto is a PHP application that uses the GD2 library to mess about with image files. Installing it is a matter of unzipping the source files to a web accessible directory.
