MSSQL and PEAR::DB

Am getting an error when attempting to connect to MSSQL via PEAR's DB module.

$DSN is in 'mssql:USER😛ASS@HOST/DB_name' format.

Error received is "DB Error: extension not found" even though the very same DSN format connects successfully to MySQL server.

Any ideas? I'm stuck...

Hi,

seems like you didn't enable the mssql extension or something is wrong with the mssql extension.

Which OS/web server/PHP versions do you have ?

The machine is AIX 5, Apache, and php 4.3.10.

I think you're right about the mssql extensions not being enabled, but I don't know what I need to do to enable them.

I'm trying to build a cgi-binary version of php 4.3.10 using the --with-mssql flag, but it's breaking saying FreeTDS cannot be found.

Is that the mssql extensions you're talking about, or is it a PEAR-specific mssql module?

Ok,

that makes stuff a little bit more complicated. On Windows enabling the mssql extension is rather simple. But on Unix systems you need to tweak around a little bit. Download and compile/install freetds (I never tried to compile freetds on AIX so I don't know what problems might occur trying to compile freetds on AIX). Then retry to activate the mssql extension.

FreeTDS is a library that allows programs on UNIX systems to natively talk to mssql servers.

That's what I was hoping to avoid by installing pear ... freetds has been a nightmare to get working.

I know with mysql, I am able to get a cgi binary that works with MySQL engines simply by specifying the --with-mysql option, without any path or specific information.

sounds like whether I use PEAR or the php mssqs_* functions, I need the underlying freeTDS layer. Do I understand that correctly?

Yes. If you want to use mssql with PEAR:😃B or the mssql functions then you need to have a working mssql extension. On UNIX systems that means that you have to install FreeTDS.

Alrighty. Thanks for your help Thomas. I'll see how far I can get with FreeTDS. I know it wasn't very far last week.

This is a shared server environment, so I rarely have the control I would want to fix some of these issues ...

Which problems did you have compiling/installing FreeTDS ?

offhand, it threw errors looking for several libraries. I managed to get the libraries built and linked, then it started throwing other errors. I believe this was in the configure process.

I'm going to clean out this directory and start clean working with TDS. I can post more detail once I hit a wall.

well, first round of errors, from the make command :

These I resolved by uploading the readline library to the PREFIX/freetds/include directory.

Ok,

where did you install FreeTDS to ? Which configure options did you use ? Did you just download and install the readline headers ? Do you have a complete readline installation ?

For the readline library, I put readline-5.0 in the PREFIX/freetds/include directory, so the whole library is there, but I didn't configure or make anything.

FreeTDS itself is installed into /rc65/d58/pubstest/freetds. This is shared server environment, with pubstest beingthe user account with which I'm working. Of course, this complicates everything.

Am I dealing with the readline problem still, since I didn't install readline? Or is this just a problem with one of my paths from the configure script?

I ran ./configure --prefix=/rd65/d58/pubstest/freetds --disable-odbc
