LDAP Generic Search

Does anyone know if it is possible to do a generic search of your Active Directory, without specifying the exact OU that a user is a member of?

For example: I have many OUs set up and I want to search all of them for a user and retrieve information for that user. Is there a way to do this?

I tried to do a search of just (dc=hfc,dc=ad) but this didn't work (our domain is hfc.ad)

I would appreciate any help!

This is possible. It looks like your onto the right track, but I think you need to specify at least the top most OU.

Have you used LDAP and PHP successfully before?

I'm in the same situation. If I specify an OU in the base dn I get results returned. If I don't specify an OU I get no results returned. But I want to search in every OU there is.

Can it be a permission thing? The user wich I bind to Active Directory server is a 'Domain Admins' but is in 'OU=test ou'. Can this user reside in any OU?

well I am dying here. I tried all sorts of code and read every single ldap post on this site. I just can't connect. I tried against win2k ads and win2k3 ads. I am running Red Hat AS 4.0 (linux) with php 4.3.9 and trying ot search ldap on windows. I am at a loss here.
Do you have code of what works just to connect to it. I want to get somewhere I have wasted days on this with utter failure.
