Rewriting pages using php

What i'm trying to do is make something like those l33t or ebonics page translators where a person could type in a url and the site would then be displayed with certain words being replaced.
(There used to be a mr. t one floating around for example)

I'm thinking it could be done with something like str_replace but haven't actually tried it out. And i'm not sure that it would work because the site with the words/strings being replaced isn't on my server. Anyone have any clue how to do this?

fopen() and file_get_contents() both support urls

once you read the webpage into a string, you can parse it.

You'd need to pull the page down. If you wanted to start out immediately, you might just make a copy and post it to your server. But if you wish to automate this, I'd recommend checking out [man]curl[/man]. Its pretty easy to work with. You're other alternative is fsockets and [man]fsockopen[/man]. Use either of these to retrieve the page to convert.

Once you have the page, something like str_replace would probably be a great start. I don't know if you need the horsepower [man]preg_replace[/man] has (at a cost of performance).

Well, I had it working on localhost using fopen and fread, then str_replace. I set fread to 1000000 characters, but it seems to only read a few then barf on me.

Also, does anyone know if theres a way to make str_replace not case sensitive?

dont know what to tell you about fopen() only reading part of the page. try using file_get_contents()

case insensitive:

str_ireplace()

if you dont have php5, grab that function from here
