Database transfer?

Hey all,

I am responsible for making an online database for my high school of all the students currently attending the high school.

I am very proficient in MySQL but have no experience in Microsoft Access, and currently I have a Microsoft Access database file (on my computer, not internet) that I would like to transfer a few columns (2445 rows) including student name, grade, birthdate, phone number, and address to a MySQL database online. First off, is this even possible. Second, if so, how would I go about doing it and where should I look. I googled this and figured out that there is software (that you have to pay for) that can migrate the table from Microsoft Access to an online MySQL database. However, I would like to do this on my own...I just want a table in MySQL with the five columns listed above.

Try looking for a way to export the data in a format that you will know how to import into mySQL. Possibly try an Access message board and see if you can get info on how to export the data you need.

have you heard of this ever being accomplished, and if so, where would I start?

I'm sure that it has to be possible to export data from Access into some type of text file that you should be able to import into mySQL easily enough. I personally have no experience with Access so I couldn't tell you where to begin, but I'm sure the information is out there. Try searching for: Microsoft Access Export CSV -- or something of that nature. I just did that search and a whole bunch of results came back that looked promising.

are csv files compatible with MySQL exporting?

CSV = Comma Separated Values

If you export to CSV you'll get a text file with a whole bunch of lines, and it'll have all of the values separated by commas, it might look something like this:

Timmy Jones,11,12/14/1984,555-1212,123 Main Street
Jessica Smith,10,09/22/1985,222-2222,4321 Grand Blvd
...

And so on, I'm sure you can get that into mySQL easy enough.

in that phpMyAdmin screenshot, you are allowed a csv file that is 30 megs large, however, my phpMyAdmin only allows 2 megs...and the file I need to upload is 10 megabytes.

Could I raise the upload limit by simply changing the upload_max_filesize value in php.ini (currently set at 2)?

Hi,
I don't believe it is any setting within phpMyAdmin itself. I think php.ini settings are where these limits are established.

I have this from php.ini

you may need to modify some other settings, here are

you can change these just for the time needed to import that file then change them back.
