hi, i'm very new to PHP.. and i'm trying my best but failing miserably!!

heres what i want to do:

i have a text box on site.
this text box is a "Secret code" box.

once a user types the code in correctly, a button, or link appears, and allows them to continue..

example: the code is 12345

i type 1234 and nothing happens, but when i put the 5 in there, its instantly recognized as the "secret code" and then a link to private.php appears beneath the box!

so... yeah... i can't even begin to figure out how to make it... but if someone wants to be a super star and make it for me, so i can see how you did it, and learn!! that would be magnificent!!

If you don't want to submit a form, and would rather just make the link appear when the code is put in right, then you need to look into a JavaScript solution. JS is client-side and is what you need. PHP is server-side, so there is no way to do what you are talking about with it since the page is parsed and then sent to the browser.

This question would probably be better served in a JavaScript forum.

but with javascript, wouldn't the user be able to view the source, then see the secret code?

okay, how about this then? use a form, to submit, but making sure that the textfield "$secretcode"=="12345" is there a way to make that happen first, then submit to the next page?

They'd pretty much be able to get it either way by viewing the source. Now, you could define a variable in some include file stored in a protected directory. Then compare that variable to the submitted value. That may be a good route to go with (but it still involves submitting the form to get the link to show)

Using JS, you can "encode" the secret code, anyhow, so you could still pseudo-hide it.
