header issue

hey folks

i've got a really interesting issue here. i'm getting Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent in /data/www/somepath/_mailer.php on line 37

this isnt new to me. i've had this before. as a result i've checked for stray carriage returns, random spaces, incorrectly included files, random echo/print, php runtime errors, anything that may cause this issue, but there's nothing there that i can see that will cause this.

the strange thing to me, is the fact that it's not saying where the output was started as it normally would. i've tried output control to no avail.

it was working previously...

mailer.php includes one file: smtp2.php. unfortunately, i cant post any code. =[

has anyone come across anything like this before?

as far as why it used to work and all of a sudden gave you problems, it could be because the servers config changed. some php installs use some output buffering by default.

check the html source output by your script. whatever is before the php error, is your culprit.

if you cant find anything, i would do a quick check just to see if your overlooking something:

make a new blank php file, output nothing but a call to header(), and see if you get an error. if so, something is very wrong.

both php and apache also have options to auto prepend files. id investigate that too in case someone set that up.

interesting. never thought about prepending. i'll have a look.

as for the page source, i'd already had a quick looky there, nothing except the php error:

absolutely strange... there was nothign being outputted at all. apache wasnt prepending anything....

turns out the mail function was timing out, but the header was sent before the the mail function returned false, and showing that headers had already been sent.

really strange. i create new files and put pretty much the same code in and it worked fine.... shrug
