php with a MySQL DB

Hi I have been looking at doing a site with nuke like geatures such as user login , cp & private areas but I don't like the nuke cookie cutter style of site.
Is it possible to convert my html site to php then add a MySQL to it & if so how would I go about setting up the DB ?
I have apache2 with php4.3.4 & php MyAdmin on site . I haven't seen any thing slow enough to walk me through the DB set up or that says you can do it at all .

Yes its always possible! 😉

But what you really need to do is to evaluate if its worthwhile building your own site from scratch - with all the functionality that you require. Or pick one 'off the shelf' and extend it / customise it to your needs...

It all depends on what you want - I'm betting that using an old the shelf cms would do the trick and will allow you to add more functionality quickly and easily..

Also theres lots of them to choose from!

I've had done sites with Xoops and Mambo and found them both to be good opensource cms systems,

I'm guessing the off the shelf will cost something . If I don't do it I won't learn it .
I found a tool to convert my html site to php but I don't think it's the way to go.
I think I just need to apply some php to call for the html . Then have some kind of MySql set up for login & user cp
(theme displays) though I don't have a clue on how to configure a db for this or even how to set the tables up.

I really need an open source example to review to see how it's done & give me some ideas on what to do with the layout .
As I said I don't like the nuke (all 1 style) of web site & much rather have it unique like html but with Sql features .

OK - now we're getting somewhere!

Those sites are all (well at least 90%) opensource - so are free.

I think from what you say - that all you really require is a few bits of 'bling' for your site that you can get through using php & mysql...

No problems - just rename the site pages from .html to .php for any pages and links you want to use php in (it still will run fine) - then if you want to add any php functionailty just use the php tags and include the code..

Look at the mysql tutorials - to get you sorted and hooked up to mysql from php and have a play!

Thanks I'll give it a try & see. Yes you are right all I wanted to do was have a SQL to restrict areas to members only & maybe have a block of info displayed here & there.
I can rename the .html to .php easily now I have to get a look @ a SQL set up to point to a login block & such.
