Checkbox Help (Inserting into DB)

On my news manager I'm developing I want the client to be able to add a news story of their own, or link externally to one.

I want to have a checkbox that they can select if they want it to link to an external news item. If they do not select the checkbox I'd like the value for news_external to be set to 0, if they do select the checkbox I'd like the value for news_external to be set to 1.

How can I do this?

a basic if/else should be able to do this, something like this:

if(isset($_POST['news_external'])) {

$news_external = 1;

} else {

$news_external = 0;

}

// then insert add $news_external  to database.
