PHP/MYSQL - Login & Registration Function help - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

🙂 Hi Guys,

I am about to embark on the next phase to me website for a university project.

'Login & Registration'.

Above shows the site as it stands. Products are viewable etc and searchable.
The box marked 'Log In OR Register' will house the login form or a link to the registration page (once logged in), and of course change to :

Logged in as: ...........
My Account
Log Out! "

Once logged in.

I will also have a registration page where the users can submit their details etc, including their 'interests'. These interests will be used, once logged in to dispaly items realted to the logged in user.(in a specific area)

The users profile can be editted once logged in etc etc.

What is the correct way to go about this? The correct stages?

Any help GRETLY APPRECIATED.

what part exactly do you need help with.

bassically you just need to store the users details in a db, then when they try to login check the db for there username / password combo. if found, save a session variable $_SESSION['logged'] = true, or something allong those lines.

half of learning to program is not so much writting the code, but thinking the problem through. coding is the easy part.

I want to go through the correct spteps inorder to accomplish such a task.

i.e what should be done first etc etc.

You will be able to see an area on the left that will contain the login form:

Also there will be a registration page whic will contain a form etc.

This form will be used to allow the registeresd user to edit the profile etc.

Should I create the forms first then start no the php / my sql coding ?

Hi thanks, its not the internal working parts of the function really, its the way to go about creating the function.

Which way first.

Creat forms > create php > create mysql ???

etc etc

Ive enclosed a task breakdiown to the function:

Member Login and Registration.

Show a small form allowing the user to ‘log in’ OR ‘register’ – this is displayed on every page in the space provided.

LOGIN. (login.php)
-Allow users to login

Check the ‘login_name’ and the password that the customer types against the ‘login_name’ and password stored in the database. If the the ‘login_name’ and password are okay, the customer enters the site - and the time and date they logged on is entered into the database. (The login form then changes to show the users name and gives them the option to go to ‘My account’ OR ‘log out’. If the ‘login_name’ and/or password are not okay, the customer is returned to the login page.

REGISTER. (register.php)

Show a page where users can fill in the information needed to obtain a member account.

Check the information the customer typed in for blank fields or incorrect formats. If bad information is found, show the form again so the customer can correct the information.

When good information is entered, INSERT the new member to the database.

EDIT USER DETAILS. (edituser.php)- Show a page where users can change their information.

Check the information the customer typed in for blank fields or incorrect formats. If bad information is found, show the form again so the customer can correct the information.

When good information is entered, UPDATE the member in the database.

FORGOTTERN PASSWORD. (forgotpassword.php)

Show a page where the user can enter their email address, and a new password is sent to them.

The above is the first part that I would love to have completed.

well, youve already got your plan, and it looks on target.

have you got your db setup with the table / fields your going to need? that would be the first thing i would do. from there its just a matter of going through and writting the code to bring your plan to life.

were not going to write it for you. download the manual, and make a start. ask questions when you run into problems.
