Hello Everyone,
I’ve been teaching web design at the high school level for five years now. I only know how to design static pages with .css and currently use the Macromedia Studio MX 04 Suite. I’ve been asked to teach a second year/honors class in web design that will include databases and programming. After doing a little research I’ve decided to focus on .php and MySql because they are free, cheap hosting and everyone seems to think they are the easiest to learn.
I have a little knowledge regarding databases, but not much… MS Access in BCIS from the college days. I currently maintain a personal web site to keep family and friends up to date on what I’m up to and it’s also a place where I can learn and experiment with new skills/technologies.
My question is this…. I’d like to learn how to put all of my photos and blog entries into a database and then publish them on my website but I don’t know how, can anyone here help?
If you go to http://benrud.net/pics/lake/2004_lake/memorial_day.shtml you’ll see a bunch of photos for my wife, me and our friends on the lake for Memorial Day. What I’d like my database to do is organize all of my photos into categories and then albums. From there I’d like the database to display the photos in thumbnails/tables. When a thumbnail is clicked I’d like it to open a page like this one http://benrud.net/pics/lake/2004_lake/memorial_dau/amanda.shtml
If you can, please direct me to a tutorial that can teach me this or reply with suggestions/instructions. The reason I’m asking you to help with my personal site and not just to teach me php/mysql is because I’m a “practical application†teacher. If I can’t see a use for it I have a hard time learning it. I know teaching my student how to build a web photo album, web diary, web CD collection, etc…. will interest them so they’ll pay attention and learn.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Enjoy the photos!
Mr. Benrud
