PHP newbie looking for some starting help

Hello Everybody

I am relatively new to the PHP world and I am looking for a little help to get me started on a small project I have.

What I am trying to accomplish is a drop down menu that will list all files located in a directory on the server. Also having the feature that the users can select the required files to open them (mostly .doc and .xls extensions).

If somebody could post some sample coding that I could play with it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board, Im not going to give you working code which does exactly what you require however here is how you can read a directory

Taken from the PHP Manual - http://au2.php.net/manual/en/class.dir.php

$d = dir("/etc/php5");
echo "Handle: " . $d->handle . "\n";
echo "Path: " . $d->path . "\n";
while (false !== ($entry = $d->read())) {
   echo $entry."\n";
}
$d->close();

Hope that helps start you off.

I would suggest taking a look through the php manual. It has a great many code samples in it and was indispensible in teaching myself PHP.

Thanks for your quick reply guys. I have been browsing through the PHP manual for the last couple of days (online) and it just seems to jump you around alot, so I thought I would get some direction. Nothing ever comes easy and I expect that. Thats the beauty of being a newbie...lol. I'll keep plugging away at it and see what I can come up with. If I hit anymore snags I'll ask for a coulpe more hints.

Well ive given yo a huge hint basically look into the Directory functions and File System Functions for what you want these are the things you require.

{
$dp = opendir($dir);
while ($currentFile!==FALSE){
$currentFile = readdir($dp);
$files[]=$currentFile;}
return $files;
}

Should work. 😉
Returns an array with all the files of the directory.
