Database Abstraction and other PEAR code

Do you all generally use a DBA such as DB from PEAR? If so, which one do you use, and why?

How about other PEAR code...do you try and standardize as much as possible or do you try and write tighter code? It has been my observation that while PEAR code is flexible it is generally a little bloated in the sense that it has features that I may not need. Is the standardization worth the extra weight, in your opinion?

I dont really see how this might help you with the DB stuff, but I thought the PEAR methods were for transfering XML data back and forth between different servers. Or was that the SOAP methods? And from what I've read and heard about both are they are gaining popularity with all their features. Also, from what I've seen of the PEAR coding (isn't there a whole lot of packages for PHP?) it looks like a lot of extra weight. I'm always on the look out for small functions and methods, instead of these monsterous things.
