PHP 5 with MySQL

Hi I have PHP 5 running with Apache on windows XP. I'm trying to get MySQL to work with PHP. I have read the sticky post on the subject, and figured out that I have to uncomment the extension in php.ini I did this. I also needed php_mysql.dll so I downloaded it and copied to the appropriate directory. Keep in mind that I have successfully installed MySQL and can use it to create and manipulate DB's. but I keep getting a function undefined when I run a php script with mysql commands. If I go to the php folder on the hard drive and run the .exe It says that an api does not match between the module and php. Any ideas on how to get this to work? Thanks

Well to be exact it says this error:

Unknown(): (null): Unable to initialize module
Module compiled with module API=20041031, debug=0, thread-safety=1
PHP compiled with module API=20020429, debug=0, thread-safety=1
These options need to match

this only happens when I try to use MySQL with PHP. Any help? Thanks!
