what are you trying to secure them from
the answer is usually pretty simple. you simply cannot every trust ANY data that comes from the user.
implementing that however, isnt always so simple.
but like implied above, you really need to provide a lot more info.
primarily sql injection .... i plan to use SSL to secure the data during transport to - fro ...
do some reading up on sql injection and familiarize yourself with some of the things to watch out for
also, look at mysql_real_escape_string()
