virtual servers?

Ok, not sure if this is the correct forum for the likes of this, but here goes.....

I have on my computer the following installed.....

Apache
PHP
MySQL

In theory i should be able to tap in my computers IP address and voila i should get some sort of response.

My problem is that im behind a broadband router which connects all the PCs in my home LAN to the same internet connection.

When i give my IP address to say my sister in the room next door, she gets the contents of whats within the www folder. However if i go to my neighbour across the street and give him the same address he gets a server not found error.

Ima ssuming that this is something to do with my router, but Im not to familiar about how to set it up so that it will redirect incoming TCP requests to my machine.

I was reading through the docs of it and came across something which sounded like it did the job. It was called 'Virtual server'.

Can anyone go about helping me set it up so that my machine can act as a fileserver?

basically, routers use NAT - name address translation(?) - to put several computers behind one connection.

when you give your sister your ip, that's your nat'd ip - ie it is internal. What people need is your external ip, as assigned by your isp

your router config / diagnostics should show this somewhere.

what you need to do to get your computer visible is called port forwarding.

HTTP traffic operates over port 80 - when a request comes in to your router, port forwarding can tell the request which computer in your network to forward the request to, based on the port number.

Not to be nitpicky (okay a little) but it's Network Address Translation 🙂

You should also be aware that many ISPs block port 80 on your uplink simply to stop people from running a public website from their home. The ISP does not want the traffic a successfull home website can generate and, more importantly, they want the revenue from hosting the website themselves.

haha, NAT works just fine for me!

I managed tog et it working, i phoned the ISP and they don't block any ports, so i had a fiddle with ym router and changed something...but ti works now🙂
