using fsockopen to get information from PDF file

hi,
is there a way in which we can access a pdf document online and download data from it through php ????
as of now i can only think of fsockopen() but i dont have any clue as to how to go about it ?????
anybody have any idea?????
The reason for this is there are 100s of documents which are placed numberwise that I need to access and download information from.....

what information do you want from them? the whole file or just certain parts.
[man]file_get_contents[/man] will take a full URL and download the contents of the file, after that you can use [man]fopen[/man] and the other file functions to save them to a file. otherwise you can use http requests to get the file using fsockopen and then seek to certain parts. in any case file_get_contents will probably be the easiest. even with that you can search through the binary data for certain things.

Could there be a more machine-friendly source for the same information? Also, have a search on Google for something like "pdf2text" (which is what I'd guess a PDF-to-text converter would be called). Maybe you can use one of those.
