installation directions for various os's and setups located at www.php.net/install
a basic intro tutorial at www.php.net/tutorial
once you get a basic grasp of the language, go to www.php.net/manual/ and read all of section V, look at a bunch of the different function references in section VI, obviously many will be useless to you but its good to know they exist. I would stress reading about Array Functions, String Functions, Date and Time Functions, MySQL database Functions, Filesystem functions, and most others arent important.
thats pretty much how i learned 3 years ago, and it did well for me. Also if you buy a book on php, every one that I have seen, has a chapter on installing it. most books are modeled after the php manual just going through each section, making it a little more readable and providing their own examples.
