[Resolved] Valid insert?

is this a valid insert statement?

INSERT INTO tbl_name ('field1', 'field2') VALUES ('$var1', '$var2') Where `field3 = '$var3');

If not how do I insert only the values that match the criteria??

i find this INSERT syntax much less accident prone:

INSERT INTO tbl_name SET 
field1 = '$var1',
field2 = '$var2' 
WHERE field3 = '$var3'

What about if I do something like this?

INSERT INTO tbl_name SET
field1 = '$var1',
field2 = '$var2'
WHERE '$var3 = '$var4'

can I do it when two variables match?

or is it better to use some kind of loop?

what you are suggesting will work just be careful with your quotes:

$var1 = 123;
$var2 = 456;
$var3 = 'username';
$var4 = 'Joe Blow';

$sql = "INSERT INTO tbl_name SET 
field1 = '$var1', 
field2 = '$var2' 
WHERE $var3 = '$var4'";

echo $sql;
// outputs INSERT INTO tbl_name SET field1 = '123', field2 = '456' WHERE username = 'Joe Blow'

To make it a liittle clearer

have an input field for numbers.

They are passed using post into my csv uploader....

I am then exploding them into an array....

I only want to insert the records from the csv file that have those numbers as one of the fields....

I don't see how any of these can work. Doing an INSERT, field3 does not yet exist so the where clause is invalid. At the very least it would have to involve filed3 in another record in the same table or another table. Yes the logic of $var3=$var4 is valid in sql, but you might as well check that in your script before runnning the query.

whoops, roger is absolutely right, for some reason i thought these were all UPDATE queries instead of INSERTs, my bad.

the basic syntax is the same but without the WHERE clause.

K i fixed it.. thanks for help...

I had to put the insert statement into an if statement that compared my two variables.... Seems to be working... On to the testing stage

Just read the rest of the posts and see that you are uploading a csv and then will process it through a loop. Not needed. Insert all of the records into a work table = 1 operation, and then use an insert...select with a where clause to do it in 1 query = 2 operations with no code loop = far more efficient.
