telnet via php socket

hi,
i would like to realise telnetconnects witth a php script. i am using php sockets to connect and send commands. while this works on some servers, on others (i think with secure telnet) i just get weird characters back instead of readable text. does anyone has any idea or maybe solved a similar problem in the past?

this is something i have always wanted to do. but just havent found the time. you will need to begin disecting how ssl and ssh work to get it working though. seeings how php has openssl library's available im sure its quite possible to the determined individual to make this work
